Cold Storage & Cold Chain Solar Installation
Refrigeration is the single biggest cost a cold store carries — and it runs every hour of every day. That makes cold storage one of the highest-return, most compelling cases for rooftop solar anywhere.
Overview
A cold storage facility exists to hold temperature, and that means its refrigeration compressors run continuously — day and night, through every season. For potato and agricultural cold stores across the NCR belt, for pharmaceutical and food cold chains, and for the cold rooms attached to processing units, electricity for refrigeration is by far the largest operating expense, often dwarfing every other cost.
That relentless, high load is precisely why cold storage solar is so compelling: there is always demand for the power, so nearly everything a rooftop system generates during the day is instantly consumed by the compressors. VSOLARIZE designs cold-chain solar systems sized to that heavy daytime refrigeration load, with hybrid and backup options where temperature reliability is critical.
Why cold storages benefit from solar
No commercial segment self-consumes solar as completely as cold storage:
- Your load never drops. Compressors run 24×7, so every daytime solar unit is used on-site — there is no wasted or cheaply-exported generation. This is the ideal load profile for solar economics.
- Refrigeration is your biggest bill. Because cooling dominates consumption, shaving the daytime portion with solar produces very large absolute savings.
- Summer peaks align with solar peaks. Cooling demand is highest in the hottest months — exactly when solar generation is strongest.
- Reliability adds a second benefit. Paired with battery or DG-hybrid configurations, solar can also improve resilience for temperature-critical stock.
Electricity consumption patterns
A cold store's electricity profile is unusually flat and unusually large:
- Continuous compressor load — the dominant, round-the-clock consumption that defines the facility's bill.
- Condenser fans and pumps supporting the refrigeration cycle.
- Seasonal and occupancy swings — load rises as chambers fill (for example, at harvest for agri cold stores) and in peak summer.
- Ammonia or other refrigeration plant rooms with their own safety and electrical considerations.
Because the base load is so high and constant, a solar system is almost never over-sized for a cold store during daylight — the facility can absorb a large array's entire output, which is what makes the returns exceptional.
Recommended solar system sizes
Cold storage systems are sized to the heavy daytime refrigeration load and available roof:
50–150 kW
Smaller cold rooms and single-chamber stores.
150–500 kW
Standard multi-chamber cold storages and agri cold chains.
500 kW–1 MW+
Large cold-chain facilities and processing units with extensive refrigeration.
Sizes are indicative ranges — your exact system is designed from a site survey of roof area, load profile and sanctioned load.
Typical ROI & payback
Cold storage frequently delivers the fastest payback of any commercial segment — commonly in the region of 3 to 4 years — precisely because self-consumption is near-total and the offset load is so expensive. After payback, the facility runs on largely free daytime power for two decades, materially improving the economics of a thin-margin business.
Your exact payback depends on your tariff, chamber occupancy pattern and roof area. We model it against your actual monthly consumption in the feasibility report.
Net metering
Because a cold store consumes almost everything it generates, net metering plays a smaller role than in warehouses — but it still credits any brief surplus (for example on low-occupancy days). Where reliability matters more than export, we may recommend a hybrid design with battery or DG integration rather than a pure grid-tied export system. VSOLARIZE handles all DISCOM and net-metering formalities.
Ownership models — CAPEX, RESCO & PPA
We structure the investment to fit your balance sheet:
- CAPEX (you own it): you fund and own the plant, keep 100% of the savings and claim accelerated-depreciation tax benefits. Best lifetime returns.
- RESCO (zero investment): we own and operate the system on your roof; you pay only for the units you use at a lower tariff — no capital, no maintenance burden.
- OPEX / PPA (pay per unit): a Power Purchase Agreement where you buy the generated power at a fixed, lower per-unit rate with no upfront cost.
Given the very strong economics, CAPEX usually delivers outstanding returns for cold stores — but RESCO/PPA remains available for operators who prefer zero investment.
Operation, maintenance & monitoring
For a cold store, a shaded or dirty array quietly raises your biggest bill — so monitored, disciplined maintenance directly protects margin:
Remote monitoring
Live generation and fault alerts, so any dip is caught before it costs you units.
O&M
Scheduled panel cleaning, thermal checks and preventive maintenance to hold peak yield.
AMC plans
Annual maintenance contracts for hands-off, high-uptime operation year after year.
Warranty support
Manufacturer warranties on panels (25–30 yr performance) and inverters — we manage claims.
Safety & standards
Cold storage installations are engineered with extra care around refrigeration plant. We keep the solar DC and AC systems, isolators and cable routes clear of ammonia or refrigerant plant rooms, design earthing and lightning protection for the facility, and plan the array so it never obstructs ventilation or plant-room access. All wiring and protection follow IS standards, with clear isolation points for safe maintenance without risking the cold chain.
Installation process
We install without ever putting your stored stock at risk:
- Survey & load study — refrigeration load, roof structure over insulated panels, and consumption analysis.
- Feasibility & ROI — sized to your continuous daytime load, with any hybrid/backup options.
- Design & approvals — layout that protects plant access; DISCOM paperwork.
- Installation — mounting engineered for insulated roof structures, done without interrupting refrigeration.
- Commissioning & monitoring — testing and remote performance tracking.
